One of the many attacks thrown at President Obama from his detractors has been about racking up the national debt. Obama tossed that back at Republicans at a fundraiser in Baltimore, arguing that the inherited a massive deficit from the very beginning. Indeed, the Republicans ordered a nice steak dinner, just as Obama was grabbing a seat — and stuck him with the tab.
“I love it when these guys talk about debt and deficits,” Obama said. “I inherited a trillion dollar deficit.” Refuting the attacks, he added, “We signed two trillion dollars in spending cuts into law…Spending under my administration has grown more slowly than under any president in 60 years.”
The idea that he’s to blame for this “is just wrong.” Eight years of George W. Bush and two wars set the stage, Obama pressed, asserting, “They baked all this stuff into the cake with those tax cuts” and the war. He continued, “It’s like somebody goes to a restaurant, orders a big steak dinner, a martini and all that stuff, then just as you’re sitting down they leave and accuse you of running up the tab.”
The deficit blame game. That’s one we’re sure to see countless more rounds of leading up to November.
